My Body Makes Poo Social Visual Guide
My Body Makes Poo is a child-friendly social visual guide designed to help Autistic children and other neurodivergent children understand how their body makes poo, recognise body signals and develop a clearer understanding of the toileting process.
Using simple, reassuring language alongside clear visual supports, the guide introduces what happens after we eat and drink, how food travels through the body and how the parts the body does not need eventually become poo. It explains this natural body process without shame, pressure or unnecessary complexity.
The guide also introduces interoceptive body signals associated with needing to poo. Children are supported to understand that their body may give them signals when poo is ready, and that they can give their body time when using the toilet.
Importantly, My Body Makes Poo acknowledges that pooing does not always feel easy. The guide normalises experiences of discomfort or difficulty and explicitly teaches children that they can ask a trusted adult for help when they need support.
The visual guide explores:
how eating and drinking connects with digestion and making poo
how food travels through the body
why everybody's body makes poo
noticing body signals associated with needing to poo
going to the toilet when the body feels ready
understanding that poo can sometimes feel difficult or uncomfortable
asking a trusted adult for help
making poo in the toilet
washing hands after using the toilet
developing body awareness gradually and at the child's own pace.
Created with a neuroaffirmative approach to Autism and toilet learning, this resource focuses on understanding, body awareness, autonomy and supportive adult relationships rather than rewards, compliance or pressure.
Ideal for
Autistic and neurodivergent children, children beginning toilet learning, children developing awareness of poo and digestion, children who find body signals difficult to recognise, and parents, teachers, SNAs, Early Years practitioners and other professionals supporting toileting.
Digital PDF resource. Ideal for use at home, in school, Autism classes, Early Years settings or alongside individualised toilet learning support.
